Glimpses - Part I



Art is not easy, it takes lot of time and efforts,Artists think of Art all the time, unlike professionals who work only for 8 hours a day ' said Parvadhavardhini Gopalkrishnan, Principal of WelcomeGroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration, Manipal University after inaugurating ‘Glimpses’ an art exhibition by Veena Srinivas at Prasad Art Gallery, Mangalore, on 5th December 2011.

Dr Mukund Prabhu , a well known historian and founder member of our Association spoke about the subject art of ‘Kaavikale’ and its earlier version where it was also used to decorate the borders of windows and doors of the konkani tribes in Goa and uttar Kannada, he said that this art had come from Goa.

Mohan Alva, in his presidential address, also spoke about ‘Kaavikale’ a mythological art. He lamented that this great form of art is losing its value in the name of innovation and development. He said that as many of the temples are renovated and no efforts has been made to preserve this kind of art and lauded Veena for trying to give life to this art through paper.

The art teacher of Veena Srinivas and ex-president of D.K.Philatelic and Numismatic Association, M.R.Pavanje was also present on the stage. He said that it was a great pride to him to see his pupil's art being exhibited and blessed his student and said that he would like to see her attain higher glory. 
Baikady Janardhan Achar compered the event and Thapasya Bhandary proposed the vote of thanks.

The exhibition will be open till  December 9 from 10 am to 7 pm.

Monthly Meeting of DKPNA - November 2011


A Philatelic exhibition on "Children's Day" by Dr.Ratheesh Udupa was held at the venue. Mr.Jayaprakash displayed coins released by Kings of Karnataka Origin, to mark Karnataka Rajyothsava.

There were about 50 members present. New members were introduced. Workshops and other activities of the members were informed to the gathering.. Exchange and other activities were held after the conclusion of the meeting.

National Postal Week - Philately Day in Mangalore.


 
As a part of the National Postal Week, a Philatelic Exhibition was conducted at Head Post Office, Mangalore on 12.10.2011 to celebrate Philately Day. The function started with a Prayer song by Mrs.Shantha Bhat . Speaking at the function held at the venue, the guest of honour, Sri. Baikady Srinivas Rao, Vice President of Dakshina Kannada Philatelic Association, who addressed the gathering with a message to the public that,  Philately is the king of hobbies and should be motivated among the children. He also thanked the Senior Suptd. Of Posts and the Sr. Postmaster for the support rendered by them to our activities and also for the efficient working of the Mangalore Bureau, with the help of ever helping Bureau-in-charge.

Our member Dr G.G Laxman Prabhu, Associate Professor of KMC, inspired the gathering with his speech. He emphasized the importance of Post men in the success of Postal Organisation and described the difficulties faced by them in rendering their daily duty, which he said as “the Postmen some times have to face the dog not only outside the house but inside too”. He also spoke on the importance of Philately in today’s world and said that the Postal Department should be lauded for bringing out stamps on various leaders not just the well known, but also lesser known freedom fighters like Veer Savarkar in the year 1970, who had the prophesied the freedom of India when he was is the Cellular Jail.

The Exhibition was inaugurated by Sri. T. G. Naik, Sr. Supdt of Post Offices, Mangalore. Vice President of D.K.Philatelic Association, Mrs. Jane D’Souza, Jt.Secretary, Mr.Mansoor Bolar, Dr. Ratheesh Udupa and Mrs. Hariet Lasrado were also present and exhibited their collection of stamps on various subjects. Exhibition also included the collection of  Sri. Baikady Srinivas Rao and Dr.G.G.Laxman Prabhu, which was open to the public from 9.00 AM to 5.30 PM. The Postmen of the venue Post Office were present and took keen interest in the program.

The gathering was welcomed by Sri Maxi G Pinto ASP (HQ) Mangalore and Vote of Thanks was proposed by Sri S S Mutnal, Sr. Postmaster, Mangalore HO. Smt. Rashma Shetty , Head of Philatelic Bureau  was the convener of the function.

There was a good crowd at the function, the interested public and the visitors enjoyed the exhibition whole day. Some of them even wanted the exhibition to be continued and demanded that this should be done on other occasion too. The absence of students were noted as it was mid term vacation to most of the schools in the area.

Monthly Meeting of DKPNA

The monthly meeting of the D.K.Philatelic and Numismatic Association was held on 9th October 2011, 10.30 AM at Head Post Office, Pandeshwar,Mangalore.


A Philatelic exhibition on "Kannada Aksharamale" by Dr.Ratheesh Udupa, "Gandhi" by M.K.Krishnayya and  Mrs.Vidya Baglodi was presented.A workshop by Mr.Jayaprakash was conducted to identify some of the fake coins. He explained the various methods to find out the fake coins from the real ones and spoke on the same. New Members were introduced and the exhibitors spoke on thier collections presented. Donations for the association was raised in the form of a Lucky Dip. Letters received were read and discussed in the Meeting and one among them received from the Postal Department in connection with Postal week was discussed and it was decided to exhibit the collection of members on 12th October in the premises of Head Post Office as part of "Philately Day".

There were about 50 members present. Exchange and other activities were held after the conclusion of the meeting.

Postal Week Celebrations.

India Post will be celebrating Postal Week from 9th October to 14th October. To brief up on the activities and importance on the same a meeting was called by the Sr.Postmaster at Head Post Office, Mangalore on 8th October 2011.

World Post Day is celebrated on October 9, remembering this date for the establishment of Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in Bern, Switzerland.

Philately Day will be held on October 12, Postmen were asked to celebrate and requested to take part actively in all the programs conducted by the Posts.

It was also announced that a Philatelic exhibition will be held in the premises of the Head Post Office, from 9.30 AM to 5.00 PM on 12th October, with the help of the members of D.K.Philatelic and Numismatic Association and were requested to give wide publicity to the same. The Exhibition is open to the General Public.

Hobby Club at MRPL.


Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. Employees Club initiated a process to find the intellectual talent(s) of its employees and their dependents.  In this connection, it started an Hobby Club, wherein the employees can show their talents viz., Stamp collection, Coin collection, IQ, Painting, Drawing,Dancing, Singing, Mimicry, Music etc.

The Hobby Club was inaugurated on 10-Sep-2011 by Shri K Lakshminarayana, GGM (HR) and Shri H C Sathyanarayana, President, MRPL Employees Club at 18:30 hrs.  The Hobby Club was inaugurated in the premises of MRPL Employees Club.

During this inauguration ceremony, the employees and their dependents exhibited their Stamp, Coin, Match box labels and Antique collection(s).  There were around 12 participants who exhibited their hobbies some of whom were members of D.K.Philatelic and Numismatic Association.  There was an 45 minutes presentation on PHILATELY by Shri K Sridhar also a member of DKPNA. Mementos were presented to all the participants.

Meeting News - 10 July 2011

Our Monthly meeting of July was held on 10 July 2011. Mr. Prabhakar Kamath exhibited his collection of Mule coins and Mr. Baikady Srinivas Rao exhibited the Miniature sheets of India.
