Coins and Stamps Exhibition at Udupi.

A Coins and Stamps Exhibition was held at Sri Sharada Mantap,Udupi on 12th and 13th May 2012 on the ocassion of Akhila Bharatiya Stanik Brahman Samavesh - 2012.



The exhibition was held by our members, Mr.M.K.Krishnayya, M.Jayaprakash Rao and K.Vishwesh.



The exhibition was visited by all those who were present including the V.I.P's, M.R.Vasudeva, Director, Air Port Mangalore, Sri. Jayaram Bhat, Chairman and Managing Director, Karnataka Bank, Mangalore, Sri. Pradeep Rao, A.G.M, SBI, Mumbai, Sri K.Prabhakar Rao, Managing Director, MCF, and Sri C.S.Rao, President Sharada Mantap.

Workshop and Exhibition at Lamington School, Hubli

A Philatelic Workshop and Exhibition was held at Lamington School, Hubli on 23rd May by the Chalukya Numismatic and Philatelic Society, Hubli.

Our President Mr.Krishnayya and member K.Vishvesh helped them to conduct the Workshop. Sri. Mohan Miskin, President, Sri. Aftab Belri Secretary and Sri. Pramod Deshpande, Treasurer of Chalukya Numismatic and Philatelic Society were present.


A.C Gopal, Jt.Director, Samyukth Karnataka, Sri Hariharan and Sri. Mahaveer Kundur were also present.The Exhibition and Workshop was attended by Young and interested stamp collectors and the Public at large.

Monthly Meeting of July 2012

The monthly meeting of July was held at the Head Post Office, Pandeshwar on 08.07.2012. President welcomed the gathering and briefed the members of new the developments.Mr.Raghava Acharya presented his collection of Coins. (A separate article will be published in this blog on Mr.Raghava Achar's Coins)


As usual the discussion started with developments in the World of Philately and Numismatics. There were not much release of stamps by India Posts recently. Mr. Prabhakar Kamath intimated about new coin release specially the Rs.1000 denomination coin of Brihadeeshwar Temple.




The highlight of the meeting was that all the members enjoyed the Coin exhibition of Mr.Raghava Achar as it was on the historical coins of Mangalore and a big pack of books on Numismatics donated by N.Rajgopal Hebbar, which is a big addition to our library.( The list of books will be published later)

Though it was raining there was a good number of members present and the Philatelic bureau was open for the members. Monthly lucky dip was also held for the Members. There were also many mediapersons present, who have given us a good publicity, for which the Association is thankful to them.  (Look for the links to Meida reports at the end)

Annual General Body Meeting - 2012

General Body Meeting of our Association was held on 10th June 2011. Mr.Krishnayya, President of our Association welcomed all the members present to start the meeting.The Annual Report was read by The Secretary, Mr.Prabhakar Kamath. Treasurer, Mr.Raghavendra Shenoy presented the Accounts which the was accepted by the members without any objections.

Election of Office Bearers of the year 2012-2014 was announced, As there were no new nominations almost all the Office bearers of the previous term was re-elected, except small changes in the committee members.      ( List of new members is published in this blog as a separate entry)

Chief Guest of the day was the Senior Suptd. of Post Offices, Mr.Chandrashekar who spoke about the plans and ideas to promote Philately in the area, and promised his full support to all our activities. He also asked the members to take help from the Posts in their respective regions and to visit schools and re-initiate the activities of Nehru Stamp Clubs.As he had recently taken Office in Mangalore, he asked all the members to introduce themselves and the members were happy to do so.

Mr.Daniel Montherio, our Senior member and International award winner, who entered his name in the Guinness Book of World Records was honoured by our Association. He was hounered by the traditional way of presenting a shawl and Memento by Senior Suptd. of Post Offices, Mr.Chandrashekar in the presence of all the members.Mr.Daniel who spoke a few words thanked all the members of the Association for their support in all his endeavors. He said that he was still a humble stamp collector and not a great Philatelist and had much more to learn about philately specially from the Seniors who had vast knowledge in this field.

Other matters were discussed and Mr.Krishnayya spoke about the problems in bringing out the magazine in time due to the lack financial help in the form of advertisement and donations, and promised that it would be printed by next month. Mr.Prabhakar Kamath spoke about the sucess of the lucky dip which was started as an activity to raise funds and about the new coin release and bookings.Members were asked to intimate us in case of change in personal information like Address, Phone No. etc.It was also decided to conduct Auctions to raise funds.

There were other general discussions relating to Philately and Numismatics and problems faced by the members. New members were introduced and addition of library books were announced. More than 50 members were present, even though the weather was rainy. Dealers were present and members had a good chance to buy their wants. Refreshments were provided after the meeting.

The meeting concluded with vote of thanks to the Posts for providing us space for our meetings, for the local press who had been providing good support by publishing our activities and all the members and non members who had donated and provided advertisements for our Magazine.

Daniel Monteiro get into ‘Guinness World Records’


Mr. Daniel Monteiro, of our Association has entered the ‘Guinness World Records’ for his largest collection of stamps featuring birds. His total collection consists of 4911 stamps from 263 countries.  The old record was in the name of Mr. Paul-Erwin Oswald of Germany. 

 
Mr.Daniel made an attempt for this record by organizing a major philatelic exhibition Birdpex-2011’ on 7th and 8th December 2011 at S.M.S. community hall, Brahmavar. More than 6000 people including VIPS, Juries, stamp collectors participated in this event.

Daniel S/o Late Mr. Peter Monteiro and Late Mrs. Florine Monteiro of Kumrugodu Village, Brahmavar, began the hobby of collecting stamps at the age of 11 (year 1973). In the Primary School, when a teacher encouraged Daniel and his other classmates to develop any one of the hobbies, the collection of stamps attracted Daniel. He began by collecting stamps of all types and then went on to specialize in water birds, which aroused his interest in them so much. Since his house is surrounded by a river and a lake with variety of water birds, he took special interest in them. 

 
The awards, distinctions and recognitions he won are numerous, 10 international level from Belgium, Austria, South Africa, Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok ,  Korea, Indonesia, China and India, 21 national level and 13 state level and from 31 prestigious institutions in Karnataka State, including All India Sahitya Convention Award, District Rajyaotsava Award, Vishveshvarayya Award, Ambedkar award, Extraordinary Personality of Konkani Award. He is also into ornithological studies, Bird watching and Environment protection activities.

Daniel’s another noteworthy  achievement was his entry into the ‘Limca Book of Records’ a due recognition for his rare collection of ducks stamps and also three records in ‘India Book Of Records’ for largest collection of ducks stamps, largest collection of birds stamps and one man largest exhibition, Birdpex-2011.

He has been an active member of D.K.Philatelic and Numismatic Association. He has organized 163 exhibitions on Philately and 31 workshops on environment and philately till date, and also actively involved himself in creating an awareness about wild life and the need to protect the  environment. He has presented papers on birds and stamps at seminars held, even at the national level. Mr. Daniel Monteiro loves to talk to children about birds and stamps, and this he does by organizing workshops, exhibitions and competitions for school children and college students.

Monthly Meeting of March 2012

The monthly meeting of March was held at the Head Post Office, Pandeshwar on 11.03.2012. The President welcomed the gathering and briefed the members of new the development.



Mr.Nagendra Nayak presented his collection of stamps and other materials of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India.There were about 250 stamps, Miniature sheets, and covers on the subject.Stamps and philatelic materials like postmarks of Jantar Mantar of Jaipur, Kaziranga National Park, Fatehpur Sikri of Agra, Humayun's Tomb, Red Fort, Pattadakal,Hampi etc. were exhibitied.He informed the members that he was not able to get any material on two of the sites like Bhimbetka Caves in Madhya Pradesh and Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park.Nagendra has a collection of picture postcards and is a member of Postcrossing.

Monthly Meeting of February 2012.

The monthly meeting of February was held at the Head Post Office, Pandeshwar on 12.02.2012. The President welcomed the gathering and spoke on the main highlights and activities after the last meeting.




Mr.M.K.Sadashivayya a senior and one of the founder members of our Association exhibited his collection of stamps on subjects like sports, Scouts and former U.S.S.R. He had a vast collection of stamps on the subjects. Being a document writer in profession he also had very old hand written stamp papers which he had exhibited at the venue and also a collection of different pens.

Dr.G.G.Laxman Prabhu exhibited his collection on the topic "Rotary on Stamps". There were different stamps on the subject both Indian and foreign and many special covers. Some of the eminent Rotarian s were also present, both members and non members they were welcomed to the exhibition. Dr. Prabhu being a charter President of Rotary explained about the stamps to the members and guests present.







 New members were introduced at the meeting, members were present in good numbers, philatelic and Numismatic subjects were discussed. M.K.Sadashivayya made arrangements for refreshments to all the members present at the meeting. The meeting which started with a silent prayer to the demised members and the kin of the members concluded with vote of thanks by the Secretary.
