National Postal Week - Philately Day in Mangalore.

 

As a part of the National Postal Week, a Philatelic Exhibition was conducted at Head Post Office, Mangalore on 12.10.2011 to celebrate Philately Day. The function started with a Prayer song by Mrs.Shantha Bhat . Speaking at the function held at the venue, the guest of honour, Sri. Baikady Srinivas Rao, Vice President of Dakshina Kannada Philatelic Association, who addressed the gathering with a message to the public that,  Philately is the king of hobbies and should be motivated among the children. He also thanked the Senior Suptd. Of Posts and the Sr. Postmaster for the support rendered by them to our activities and also for the efficient working of the Mangalore Bureau, with the help of ever helping Bureau-in-charge.

Our member Dr G.G Laxman Prabhu, Associate Professor of KMC, inspired the gathering with his speech. He emphasized the importance of Post men in the success of Postal Organisation and described the difficulties faced by them in rendering their daily duty, which he said as “the Postmen some times have to face the dog not only outside the house but inside too”. He also spoke on the importance of Philately in today’s world and said that the Postal Department should be lauded for bringing out stamps on various leaders not just the well known, but also lesser known freedom fighters like Veer Savarkar in the year 1970, who had the prophesied the freedom of India when he was is the Cellular Jail.

The Exhibition was inaugurated by Sri. T. G. Naik, Sr. Supdt of Post Offices, Mangalore. Vice President of D.K.Philatelic Association, Mrs. Jane D’Souza, Jt.Secretary, Mr.Mansoor Bolar, Dr. Ratheesh Udupa and Mrs. Hariet Lasrado were also present and exhibited their collection of stamps on various subjects. Exhibition also included the collection of  Sri. Baikady Srinivas Rao and Dr.G.G.Laxman Prabhu, which was open to the public from 9.00 AM to 5.30 PM. The Postmen of the venue Post Office were present and took keen interest in the program.

The gathering was welcomed by Sri Maxi G Pinto ASP (HQ) Mangalore and Vote of Thanks was proposed by Sri S S Mutnal, Sr. Postmaster, Mangalore HO. Smt. Rashma Shetty , Head of Philatelic Bureau  was the convener of the function.

There was a good crowd at the function, the interested public and the visitors enjoyed the exhibition whole day. Some of them even wanted the exhibition to be continued and demanded that this should be done on other occasion too. The absence of students were noted as it was mid term vacation to most of the schools in the area.

Monthly Meeting of DKPNA

The monthly meeting of the D.K.Philatelic and Numismatic Association was held on 9th October 2011, 10.30 AM at Head Post Office, Pandeshwar,Mangalore.

A Philatelic exhibition on "Kannada Aksharamale" by Dr.Ratheesh Udupa, "Gandhi" by M.K.Krishnayya and  Mrs.Vidya Baglodi was presented.A workshop by Mr.Jayaprakash was conducted to identify some of the fake coins. He explained the various methods to find out the fake coins from the real ones and spoke on the same. New Members were introduced and the exhibitors spoke on thier collections presented. Donations for the association was raised in the form of a Lucky Dip. Letters received were read and discussed in the Meeting and one among them received from the Postal Department in connection with Postal week was discussed and it was decided to exhibit the collection of members on 12th October in the premises of Head Post Office as part of "Philately Day".

There were about 50 members present. Exchange and other activities were held after the conclusion of the meeting.

Postal Week Celebrations.

India Post will be celebrating Postal Week from 9th October to 14th October. To brief up on the activities and importance on the same a meeting was called by the Sr.Postmaster at Head Post Office, Mangalore on 8th October 2011.

 

World Post Day is celebrated on October 9, remembering this date for the establishment of Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in Bern, Switzerland.

Philately Day will be held on October 12, Postmen were asked to celebrate and requested to take part actively in all the programs conducted by the Posts.

It was also announced that a Philatelic exhibition will be held in the premises of the Head Post Office, from 9.30 AM to 5.00 PM on 12th October, with the help of the members of D.K.Philatelic and Numismatic Association and were requested to give wide publicity to the same. The Exhibition is open to the General Public.

Hobby Club at MRPL.

Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. Employees Club initiated a process to find the intellectual talent(s) of its employees and their dependents.  In this connection, it started an Hobby Club, wherein the employees can show their talents viz., Stamp collection, Coin collection, IQ, Painting, Drawing,Dancing, Singing, Mimicry, Music etc.

The Hobby Club was inaugurated on 10-Sep-2011 by Shri K Lakshminarayana, GGM (HR) and Shri H C Sathyanarayana, President, MRPL Employees Club at 18:30 hrs.  The Hobby Club was inaugurated in the premises of MRPL Employees Club.

During this inauguration ceremony, the employees and their dependents exhibited their Stamp, Coin, Match box labels and Antique collection(s).  There were around 12 participants who exhibited their hobbies some of whom were members of D.K.Philatelic and Numismatic Association.  There was an 45 minutes presentation on PHILATELY by Shri K Sridhar also a member of DKPNA. Mementos were presented to all the participants.

Meeting News - 10 July 2011

Our Monthly meeting of July was held on 10 July 2011. Mr. Prabhakar Kamath exhibited his collection of Mule coins and Mr. Baikady Srinivas Rao exhibited the Miniature sheets of India.

Rules for issue of commemorative postage stamps by Department of Posts.

 .
The commemorative postage stamps issued by the Department of Posts, Govt. of India will be determined based on the following rules:-

1. Commemorative postage stamps will be issued on subjects that have a national or international stature or have made national/international contribution or impact or reflect national/international areas of concern.

2. The Annual Issue Programme shall reflect regional, cultural and ethnic balance.

3. Stamps on a particular subject shall issue only once, except thematic such as wild life, environment, transport, flora fauna etc. or regular issues like Children’s Day, Season Greetings and sets on heritage, nature, culture, art, architecture etc.

4. Stamps shall be issued only on the apex institutions, not on branches of any institution or organization.

5. There shall be not over 50 issues (maximum 100 stamps) of commemorative stamps per annum.

6. Stamps on personalities shall not exceed 10% of the Annual Issue Programme.

7. The Union Minister incharge of the Ministry of Communications & IT may approve 5% of the Annual Issue Programme.

8. The date of issue shall be fixed by the Philately Division keeping in view the significant dates relating to the subject and the availability of slots in the printing schedule.

9. Dates of issue once fixed shall not be changed. A proponent may hold a presentation function on any day on or after the date of issue.

10. Proposals may be sent by any citizen of India.

11. Proposals should be sent at least two years in advance for consideration by the Philatelic Advisory Committee (PAC) and approval by the competent authority.

12. Proposals must be submitted in the format available on indiapost.gov.in.

13. Proposals will be considered and recommended/not recommended by the PAC. They will not be carried forward for the next PAC meeting.

14. Proponents shall follow the protocol for release functions.

15. The Department of Posts will decide the subject matters, prohibited subjects renewal of philatelic products, procedure for proposal consideration and issue/release of a stamp, period of sale of commemorative/special stamps and for definitive stamps and postal stationery. It will also determine issue policy, withdrawal policy and archival policy.

16. The denominations of postage stamps shall be in consonance with domestic and international postal tariffs.

17. The personalities on whom commemorative stamp may be issued should be of national or international importance. The occasion to be commemorated must be the birth centenary or 10th /25th /50th /100th death anniversary. No stamp will be issued sooner than ten years after an individual’s death. A commemorative stamp shall be issued in honour of the head of State on his/her first death anniversary.

18. A stamp on an institution, building, monument etc. may be issued on its centenary/125th anniversary/ 150th anniversary etc. The building, institution to be so honoured must be Heritage site of national/international importance or site recognized by ASI of  national/international importance. Building of regional importance may be commemorated with issue of special cover with special cancellation.

19. At least 25% of the stamps issued in a year will be on popular themes like flora, fauna, culture, heritage etc.

20. Proponents for the stamps relating to institutions/events/large organisations are required to make a mandatory purchase of a minimum number of 1 lakh stamps and the requisite philatelic ancillaries.

GENERAL BODY MEETING - 2011-2012

General Body Meeting of our Association was held on 12th June 2011. Mr.Krishnayya The President of our Association welcomed all the members present to start the meeting.The Annual Report was read by The Secretary Mr.Prabhakar Kamath, which was passed without any objection.The Treasurer, Mr.Raghavendra Shenoy presented the Accounts which the members accepted without any objection.

Other matters were discussed and it was decided to hike the Membership fees. Likewise, Life membership fees was increased from Rs.1000/- to Rs.1500/- and Patron member from 1500/- to 2500/- but it was decided to leave the Annual membership at the earlier figure of Rs.250/- and the admission fees at the same of Rs.50/- It was also decided to give a chance to all life members to transfer as Patron member at the old rate till the next meeting.It was also decided to hike the dealer fees of Rs.50/- to Rs.100/. Many of the existing Life members converted themselves as Patron Members. Members were asked to write to us in case of change in personal information like Address, Phone No. etc.

There was a discussion relating to our magazine and the members were asked to contribute through page donations and advertisement to bring out the magazine regularly. Also decided to conduct Auctions to raise funds.

There were other general discussions relating to Philately and Numismatics and problems faced by the members. New members were introduced and addition of library books were announced. More than 50 members were present, even though the weather was rainy. Dealers were present and members had a good chance to buy their wants. Refreshments for the meeting was provided by a noted Numismatist and Coin Collector Mr.Nithyananda Pai, Life member of our Association.

The meeting concluded with vote of thanks by Mr.Mansoor.B, Joint Secretary.

Meeting

The Executive meeting of D.K.Philatelic and Numismatic Association was held at the Residence of Mr.Raghunath Prabhu, Asst. Treasurer on 04 June 2011.

It was a pleasure to visit Mr.Rahgunath's residence as it was a mini museum and we had the pleasure of viewing the same and we also thank him for his hospitality.

Mr. Daniel Monteiro enters Limca Book of Records.

Mr. Daniel Monteiro, Life member of our Association and an office staff of SMS College, also an environment lover, has been included in prestigious Limca Book of Records 2011 for his International level creditable achievements in the field of birds’ philately. 

Mr. Monteiro, so far, bagged 10 Silver and Bronze medals at international level exhibitions held in Austria, Belgium, South Africa, Hong Kong, Thailand, South Korea, Indonesia, China and India. He has received more than 30 gold, silver and bronze medals at national & state level competitions. ‘FETHERPEX – 2009’ a largest philatelic exhibition organized by him with a display of 8000 rare birds stamps at Brahmavar has been highly acclaimed by all. Mr.Daniel has 31 national and state level awards and honours to his credit.
