Manipal University Philatelic and Numismatics Club (MUPNC) in collaboration with the Rotary Club Manipal town organised a Summer Exhibition and workshop in the Melaka Manipal Medical College, Manipal Campus premises on 14th May 2016. Aim of the workshop and exhibition was to enlighten people about the fading hobbies of Philately and Numismatics and promote these hobbies in the younger generation. Of the twenty six people who exhibited their collections, fifteen were affiliated members of the Dakshina Kannada Philatelic and Numismatics Association (DAKAPANA), while eleven were members of MUPNC. Eight members of MUPNC were exhibiting their collections for the first time and it was encouraging that five of them were children below the age of 15.
The exhibition was inaugurated by Dr, N Udupa, Director Research (Health Sciences). Dr Abdul Razzak, Pro Vice Chancellor, Melaka campus, Dr. Jaspal Singh Sahota, Dean, MMMC, Malaka campus, Dr. Ullas Kamath, Dean, MMMC, Manipal campus and Dr. Suma Nair, Director, Student Affairs, Manipal University were present during the inauguration. Dr Udupa spoke about his interest for stamps during his childhood and suggested starting a museum at the University level. Dr Geetha Maiya, Deputy Director Student Affairs concluded the formal function with a vote of thanks.
More than 400 people visited the exhibition. There
were 55 collections of stamps adding to 105 frames, two collections on currency
and seven collections of coins displayed in 28 tables. A workshop was conducted by Dr Joseph Thomas,
Professor, Department of Urology, KMC, Manipal on the the “Story of the Rupee” and Mr. Jayaprakash Rao,
Secretary DAKAPANA conducted a workshop on “Introduction to Stamps”. There were over 40
attendees for the workshop. Children below the age of 15 were give free
stamps as a motivation to continue the hobby.
The
valedictory function was presided over by Dr Suma Nair in presence of Dr
Ramprasad, Faculty coordinator, MUPNC and Dr. Sulatha Bhandary, Deputy
Director, Student Affairs and Dr. Annamma Kurien, Associate Dean, MMMC,
Manipal.
MUPNC thanked DAKAPANA members for supporting
the event. it also thanked the Audio Visual Department and estate office of Manipal
University, for Mr Mafatlal H Shet, who provided free stamps for
the children. A word of appreciation to the Indian Postal Department for being
there at the event and creating the necessary awareness.
