As a part of the National Postal Week, a Philatelic Exhibition was conducted at Head Post Office, Mangalore on 12.10.2011 to celebrate Philately Day. The function started with a Prayer song by Mrs.Shantha Bhat . Speaking at the function held at the venue, the guest of honour, Sri. Baikady Srinivas Rao, Vice President of Dakshina Kannada Philatelic Association, who addressed the gathering with a message to the public that, Philately is the king of hobbies and should be motivated among the children. He also thanked the Senior Suptd. Of Posts and the Sr. Postmaster for the support rendered by them to our activities and also for the efficient working of the Mangalore Bureau, with the help of ever helping Bureau-in-charge.
Our member Dr G.G Laxman Prabhu, Associate Professor of KMC, inspired the gathering with his speech. He emphasized the importance of Post men in the success of Postal Organisation and described the difficulties faced by them in rendering their daily duty, which he said as “the Postmen some times have to face the dog not only outside the house but inside too”. He also spoke on the importance of Philately in today’s world and said that the Postal Department should be lauded for bringing out stamps on various leaders not just the well known, but also lesser known freedom fighters like Veer Savarkar in the year 1970, who had the prophesied the freedom of India when he was is the Cellular Jail.
The Exhibition was inaugurated by Sri. T. G. Naik, Sr. Supdt of Post Offices, Mangalore. Vice President of D.K.Philatelic Association, Mrs. Jane D’Souza, Jt.Secretary, Mr.Mansoor Bolar, Dr. Ratheesh Udupa and Mrs. Hariet Lasrado were also present and exhibited their collection of stamps on various subjects. Exhibition also included the collection of Sri. Baikady Srinivas Rao and Dr.G.G.Laxman Prabhu, which was open to the public from 9.00 AM to 5.30 PM. The Postmen of the venue Post Office were present and took keen interest in the program.
The gathering was welcomed by Sri Maxi G Pinto ASP (HQ) Mangalore and Vote of Thanks was proposed by Sri S S Mutnal, Sr. Postmaster, Mangalore HO. Smt. Rashma Shetty , Head of Philatelic Bureau was the convener of the function.
There was a good crowd at the function, the interested public and the visitors enjoyed the exhibition whole day. Some of them even wanted the exhibition to be continued and demanded that this should be done on other occasion too. The absence of students were noted as it was mid term vacation to most of the schools in the area.
